This rare antique original WWI US Navy recruiting poster was created by San Francisco artist Charles Stafford Duncan early in his long career. The poster is dated 1918 in the image area next to the artist’s name. Duncan renders a simple but highly effective and arresting image of a US Navy sailor’s uniform draped on a chair under the text headline It Takes A Man To Fill It – Join The Navy. The lower left hand corner indicates “Issued By Recruiting Inspector Western Division U.S. Navy” and the lower margin indicates the poster was printed by Schmidt Litho. Of San Francisco, California.

Charles Stafford Duncan was born in Kansas in 1892 and moved to San Francisco when he was about four years old. He studied at the California School of Fine Arts under the tutelage of Maynard Dixon and Ralph Stackpole and became associated with the bohemian San Francisco artist community that flourished in the early 20th century and included luminaries Diego Rivera and others. This poster was created by a San Francisco artist and was printed in San Francisco and probably didn’t see distribution beyond the West Coast of the United States which accounts for its rarity.

This vintage original poster has been professionally linen backed with some touch up as needed. A few pieces of cello tape were removed from the back and neutralized before the linen backing. A few short tears and abrasions have been expertly repaired and some creasing at the top center mitigated. The poster was issued folded and moderate wear to the fold lines shows slightly following the linen backing. Overall condition is very good for this antique original.
