This is a vintage original WWI poster was created by the artist Benjamin Kidder and issued in a few different variations. This variation was issued in support of the 31 to 1 War Chest Campaign in the Philadelphia area in 1918. The poster’s title “The First Three” refers to the first three American military personnel to be killed in action on European soiling during the First World War. Merle Hay, Thomas Enright and James Gresham are each represented by small wreathed medallion portraits above the posters tagline – Give till it Hurts, they gave till the died. All three men gave the last full measure of devotion and died together shortly after dawn on November 3, 1917 near the French village Artois following a German attack on their trench line.

This original antique poster has a small paper label affixed to the verso and some creasing on the upper left hand corner and is otherwise very clean and in very good condition. Overall condition is very good.
