American ocean liner, flagship of the United States Lines shipping company, with artwork by noted maritime artist William James Alyward. This print shows a view of the S.S. America departing from New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty and parts of the New York City skyline visible in the distance. This print isn’t dated but was probably issued around the time the S.S. America was launched on 31 August 1939, the day before Germany invaded Poland beginning WWII. Due to the outbreak of war, the S.S. America would remain in North American and Caribbean waters until it was requisitioned in 1941 for use as a troop transport and renamed the USS West Point. In 1946 the S.S. America would finish her war service and return to the United States Lines where it would remain in service until it was sold to the Greek shipping company Chandris Group and renamed the SS Australis.

This vintage original print would have been used for advertising purposes at travel and ticket agencies while the ship was operated by the United States Lines. This print has been professionally backed to archival linen with some expert touch up as needed including repair to a small bit of paper loss on the tip of the lower left corner. The print shows some light foxing most evident in the upper left corner area and a few short tears and small abrasions on the edges have been repaired during the linen backing process. The original colors are retained nicely and overall condition is very good.
