This is an original rare and early 1882 New Orleans Mardi Gras parade bulletin published by J. Curtis Waldo. This parade bulletin is a single piece folded to 19” x 12.75” which folds open to about 38” x 25”. The masthead is titled P. 40 P. Official Illustrated Journal and indicates New Orleans Mardi-Gras, February 21st, 1882. Just below the masthead is printed “Published by J. CURTIS WALDO, (Established 1869), Photo-Engraver and Publisher of The Present Age, The Royal Herald, The St. Louis Commercial Age, N.O. Annual Commercial Review, Gazetteer of Great Jackson Route, Missouri Pacific Gazetteer, St. Louis Exposition Guide, Directories, etc.”
Half of one side features color views of Mardi Gras parade floats with the first float being “Boss’s Float” followed by other floats representing different holidays of the year including New Year’s Day, Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day and more. Leading the parade is a jester carrying a sign that reads “5th Representation P.40.P Mardi Gras 1882”. The margin below the color parade float views is printed “New Orleans Lithographing Co. 78 St. Charles St., N.O.”
The back cover page also features a color illustration of a fantastical bacchanal Mardi Gras scene. Just below the fold on the front page are advertisements for “Mardi Gras Amusements” and brief descriptions of the various parade floats and cars are provided along with lots of local advertising for various New Orleans businesses.
This original and rare 1882 New Orleans Mardi Gras parade bulletin shows moderate handling wear and some toning from age. There is a small nick off the margin on the right edge not affecting text or illustrations and this parade bulletin is otherwise fully complete. This parade bulletin had a bit of separation at the intersection of fold lines which have been stabilized with a couple small half inch pieces of acid free archival tissue. This is a rare piece as we trace none at auction and a WorldCat search locates no copies. Overall condition is very good.
