This is a vintage original 1959 United States Office of Civil Defense Mobilization Cold War era advertising sign. This sign is printed one side only on lightweight cardboard in the format that was most commonly used for overhead advertising on streetcars, subways and commuter trains.

This sign was used to promote the construction of Family Fallout Shelters as part of the United States government’s civil defense program aimed at protecting American citizens in the event of a nuclear attack.   The sign shows couple building their own fallout shelter with instructions provided by a US Government booklet with text that reads:

your one defense against FALLOUT Get Free Booklet From Local Defense

The artist’s name “LEE” is signed in the lower left corner of the image area and the lower right corner indicates a 1959 GPO publication date.  This vintage original Atomic Age sign looks pretty well unused with only light handling wear and slight toning on the edges.  The back of the sign shows a bit of foxing not affecting the front side.  Overall condition is very good.
