c.1970 Planned Parenthood United States Population Growth Census Poster
Size (in): 44” x 34”
Size (cm): 112 x 86
Linen backed: No
This is an original vintage c.1970 poster illustrating U.S. Population Growth was issued by Planned Parenthood. Graphics illustrate comparative US populations for 1900, 1940, 1960 and 2000. The figures are accurate up to 1960 but the projection of 340 million is overstated by more than 20% of the actual census figure of 281 million for the year 2000.
The lower left hand corner is printed with the Planned Parenthood organization name and New York City address. This poster isn’t dated but we believe it was probably issued around 1970 when Paul Ehrlich’s book The Population Bomb was a national bestseller and world overpopulation was a hot button topic in the national media. This large poster is folded as issued and does not look like it was ever hung up or used. Overall condition is very good.
