This original antique large horitzonal format poster was created by the artist Harvey Dunn for the United States Food Administration during WWI. For this poster Dunn renders a painterly image of United States Army doughboys charging forward to attack an unseen enemy over the title They Are Giving All Will You Send Them Wheat? Dunn’s name is signed in print on the left side of the image area and the United States Food Administration name and logo both appear on the poster.
The United States Food Administration, under the direction of future President Hebert Hoover, created a number of posters encouraging American Farmers to produce wheat over other types of crops. Harvey Dunn was born and raised in South Dakota and made his way to Wilmington, Delaware to study under the tutelage of influential teacher Howard Pyle. Pyle’s Brandywine School included such luminaries of American Illustration as N.C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parrish among others. Dunn would later serve as an Artist-Correspondent with the American Expeditionary Force in France during WWI.
