This vintage original poster was issued by the National Garden Bureau during WWII to encourage Americans on the home front to plant victory gardens. This poster features the image of a smiling woman proudly carrying a large basket filled with a bountiful harvest of colorful garden vegetables with text that reads:
Plant a GARDEN for DEFENSE Health and Economy
The lower margin indicates a copyright by J.H. Burdett, National Garden Bureau and shows the printer as The Stecher-Traung Lithograph Corporation of Rochester, New York. The USDA’s Victory Garden program began during WWI, relaunched for WWII and was a major success on the home front during both wars that saw millions of Americans growing and canning their own vegetables. This poster is vintage original issued during WWII. The poster looks pretty well unused with no tape or pinholes and just slight evidence of handling. Overall condition is excellent. This is a rare poster as we don’t trace any at auction or otherwise find any other examples.
