This is an original antique c.1891 brochure promoting train travel to Cripple Creek, Colorado “the most wonderful gold mining camp in the world” issued by the Missouri Pacific Railway. This brochure is a single piece pamphlet that folds open to about 6” x 10.5”. The front cover panel is printed:
Cripple Creek…The Most Wonderful Gold Mining Camp in the World…Reached Direct Via The… Missouri Pacific Railway From St. Louis or Kansas City, Through Pueblo, The Pittsburg of the West – Direct Connections from the East, North and South.
The back cover panel is printed:
The Missouri Pacific Railway is 3 Hours Quicker Than Any Other Line From St. Louis to Cripple Creek, The Famous Gold Mining Camp. Through Service From St. Louis and Kansas City to Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Denver, where Direct Connections are made for Cripple Creek
The verso features an excerpt from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat newspaper titled Growth of Cripple Creek. Rapid Extension of the Gold-Yielding Area and has a map covering two of three panels titled Map of the MISSOURI PACIFIC RAILWAY, The DIRECT ROUTE TO CRIPPLE CREEK. This brochure also includes a timetable on one panel titled Condensed Time via Missouri Pacific Railway From St. Louis And Kansas City To Cripple Creek, Col. (3 Hours Quicker Than Any Other Line.)
This brochure isn’t dated but references in the Globe-Democrat excerpt suggest this was issued shortly after large deposits of gold were discovered in late 1890 and around the time the frenzied gold rush at Cripple Creek was peaking in 1891 and 1892. The lower margin of the front cover panel indicates this brochure was printed by the Woodward & Tiernan Printing Company of St. Louis. We locate no other copies of this rare map brochure at auction or listed on Worldcat.
This original antique timetable map brochure is fully complete with moderate handling wear and some toning from age and uneven darkening to the paper from age. There is a small bit of separation on the fold lines but the brochure is still well intact. Overall condition is very good.
