This delightful poster was created by the Oregon born artist Ray Bethers and issued by the Southern Pacific Railroad in the late 1930s to help promote the dude ranches and resorts of Southern Arizona as a travel destination. Bethers’s modernist design finds a giant saguaro cactus and two cowboys on horseback set against a colorful desert landscape as a train passes in the distance. The scene is bracketed by text that reads SOUTHERN ARIZONA DUDE RANCHES & RESORTS and Southern Pacific The only direct, main line service.
