1922 Americanism An Address By Billy Sunday Evangelist Sermon Pamphlet RARE
This is an original first edition pamphlet containing a sermon on Americanism delivered by the Evangelist Billy Sunday to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in Philadelphia on April 20, 1922. This is a booklet format of 48 pages plus the covers measuring about 6” x 4.25”. The front cover has a photo portrait of Sunday and prints the title AMERICANISM by Rev. William A. Sunday – Famous Sermon by Noted Evangelist on OLD FASHIONED TRUTHS. The title page is printed ADDRESS by BILLY SUNDAY – Auspices of THE LAW ENFORCEMENT LEAGUE OF PHILADELPHIA, Academy of Music April 10, 1922.
The introduction indicates that Billy Sunday first preached his famous sermon on Americanism as he closed a six-week religious campaign in Charleston, West Virginia on Sunday, April 9, 1922. The following day he preached the same sermon before the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in Philadelphia “…where a verbatim copy was taken”. The Introduction further reads:
“Without fear or favor or class distinction, Billy Sunday delivers a body blow to those who would destroy American ideals and American institutions and substitute Socialism, Communism, Bolshevism, Radicalism and other isms that are sapping the life-blood of a great people and a powerful nation for liberty and democracy.”
Additional copies of the sermon could be obtained from the American Constitutional Association of Charleston, West Virginia. This sermon probably lasted a couple hours and headings within the pamphlet include topics such as “No Ship Ever Wrecked On Plymouth Rock”, “Smash the Radicals”, “Russia Without A Virgin Girl”, “Blacks And Whites” and lots more (which bear a striking resemblance to today's American national discourse on politics).
This vintage original first edition is in excellent condition with just light handling wear and toning from age. A Worldcat search only locates a single copy. Email any questions. Thanks for looking.
