This is an original poster from the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair also known as the Century 21 Exposition. This poster was designed by the Dutch artist Dick Elffers to promote the Art Since 1950 exhibitions in the Fine Arts Pavilion. At the time of the Seattle fair in 1962, the Art Since 1950 exhibitions were the most extensive and important exhibitions of contemporary artists ever assembled on the West Coast of the United States featuring artists including Josef Albers, Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Philip Guston, Jasper Johns, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Ad Reinhardt, Ben Shahn, Frank Stella, Fritz Hundertwasser, Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Francis Bacon, Henry Moore and many others.
With the Mid-Century Modern design of the poster, Elffers really captures the Kennedy era New Frontier Space Age essence of the Seattle exposition. The right margin is printed “printed in the netherlands at steendrukkerij de jong & co., Hilversum 1962”. This poster is a vintage original from the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair and was never hung and has no tape of pinholes. The poster shows only modest handling wear and is very good condition overall.
