This antique original is one of the most recognized and iconic American posters of the First World War. Created by noted illustrator Howard Chandler Christy for the U.S. Navy, this poster features one of the artist’s beloved “Christy Girls” that idealized a vision of feminine beauty and innocence in early 20th century America. This vision of a beautiful young woman proclaiming “I Want You For The U.S. Navy” served as a powerful enticement for U.S. Navy in recruiting young men to join up, give up the comforts of home and sail off to fight in a far away war.
This poster has been professionally linen backed recently. A few pieces of desiccated cello tape were expertly removed from the back of the poster and neutralized prior to linen backing. The poster has had some expert touchup and precision overpainting at the bottom and on the margins in places to restore its original grandeur. The poster retains its original color and displays beautifully. Overall condition is very good.
