This striking poster was created by Joseph Pennell and issued to promote the sale of Fourth Liberty Loan war bonds in 1918. This poster uses imagery that is perhaps as dire and apocalyptic as any American poster produced during WWI. A hellish scene of New York City under attack and in flames is punctuated by wreckage of the Statue of Liberty, her head blown asunder and resting in a pile of rubble. The poster’s title, drawn from Lincoln’s Gettysburg address is simple and direct – That Liberty Shall Not Perish From The Earth Buy Liberty Bonds. This is the larger version of this poster printed by Ketterlinus of Philadelphia.
This antique original poster has been professionally linen backed and a bit of light foxing and creasing on the right edge has been expertly mitigated. The poster shows a bit of toning on the margins and bit of light touch up has been completed. Overall condition is very good.
