This vintage original poster was created by the artist Albert Herter for the YMCA and the United War Work Campaign during WWI. The United War Work Campaign was organized by several non-governmental organizations to raise money for programs supporting American soldiers during WWI. The YMCA along with the American Library Association, the Jewish Welfare Board and other charitable organizations helped to organize and promote the 1918 UWW campaign.
For this poster Herter renders an image of American doughboys somewhere in France approaching a YMCA building on winter night with deep snow on the ground and trees around them. Through the open door of the YMCA building we catch of glimpse of a warmly lit festive scene.
Albert Herter was an major artist in early 20th century America whose works include murals found in the Massachusetts State House, the Wisconsin State Capitol, the Los Angeles Public Library and the National Academy of Sciences.
This original antique WWI poster has been professionally linen backed with expert repair to small creases and a couple short tears on the edges. The colors remain strong and the poster displays very well. Overall condition is very good.
