This rare poster was created by the artist L.N. Britton for the U.S. Navy. Britton’s patriotic design, with a powerful American Eagle dominating the image, was first used during WWI. This poster, dated 1931 in the lower margin, is the second use of this design for recruiting purposes by the U.S. Navy. U.S. Navy sailors with rifles and a bugle stand at attention below Britton’s eagle decorated with a large red, white and blue Stars and Stripes shield across his chest with text that reads:
The Navy Is Calling Enlist Now
This vintage original poster was never used and has no tape or pinholes. The poster shows moderate handling wear including a short tear of about an inch and a half at the bottom center of the lower margin and another short tear of about a half inch in the top margin with neither tear affecting the image area or resulting in loss of paper. The poster shows some bumping on the edges including a small area near the bottom on the left edge that has a few small nicks, chips and short tears in the margin. Simple linen backing could easily rectify these issues and return the poster to it’s original appearance. Overall condition is very good as is.
