This vintage original poster was created by Wisconsin born artist Lester Bentley and issued by the United States Coast Guard for recruiting purposes in 1943. For this poster Bentley renders an image of a Coast Guard officer and Coast Guardsman at the ship’s wheel over the title Setting The Course To VICTORY With The U.S. COAST GUARD. Lester Bentley was a highly regarded artist who created murals for the WPA before serving in the Coast Guard during WWII where he created several recruiting posters. After the war Bentley established himself as a portraitist creating well known portraits for President Eisenhower, Cardinal Mooney, Supreme Court Chief Justice William O. Douglas and others.
This vintage original poster shows light handling wear including some bumping and slight creasing on the edges in places and has a short half inch tear without paper loss on the edge in both the upper and lower margins. This poster has no tape or pinholes and was probably never hung up or used. The colors are strong and overall condition is very good.
