This is a vintage original souvenir postcard sent home from the 1946 Operation Crossroads Atomic Bomb tests at Bikini Atoll area of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. This postcard features artwork of three members of the American military in supersized form standing astride the Pacific islands of Eniwetok, Kwajalein and Bikini as a large mushroom cloud rises on the horizon. Looking Into The Future appears as a caption across the lower margin. The artwork is signed in the lower right hand corner as “P.R.C. C.B. Carl.” The back of the card has an inscription from the original owner who sent this home as a souvenir which reads:
Cross Roads operation Island of Kwajalein – Your Son, George
Operation Crossroads comprised the first atomic bomb tests following WWII. Two atomic bombs were tested as part of Operation Crossroads with the tests named Able and Baker. Both atomic bombs tested were of the “Fat Man” plutonium implosion-type dropped on Nagasaki. For the Able test the atomic bomb was dropped on target ships from a B-29 Superfortress bomber. For the Baker test the atomic bomb was detonated 90 feet underwater on July 25, 1946.
This vintage original souvenir postcard shows light handling wear, a bit of light foxing and toning from age. The card was presumably mailed home in an envelope as it has no address, postmark or stamp and just the inscription. Overall condition is very good for this rare piece of Atomic Bomb history.
