This antique original WWI broadside poster was issued shortly after the passage of the 1917 Selective Service Act that authorized the federal government of the United States to raise a national army through conscription. This poster features the image from Harry “H.R.” Hopps iconic Destroy This Mad Brute poster, considered by many to be the greatest American poster of the First World War, surrounded by text inducing prospective soldiers to enlist as volunteers before conscription.
The poster gives the addresses of U.S. Army Recruiting Stations throughout Pennsylvania and the lower margin indicates the poster was printed by The Scranton Republican Printery of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Harry Hopps’s Destroy This Mad Brute poster is a great rarity that sells at prices well into five figures. We believe this variant to be even rarer. We trace none at auction.
This antique original unrestored poster has a short tear of about an inch on the right edge without loss of paper and the edges are bumped in places. The poster was folded once laterally and once vertically and shows some creasing in the image area along with some toning from age and moderate handling wear. Ink hand stamps indicating “Lock Haven, PA” and “Carbondale PA. P.O.” have been applied to the lower right-hand corner. Overall condition is very good.
