This vintage original Cold War era U.S. Army recruiting poster is not signed but was probably created by the U.S. Army artist Gilbert Gordon Early who created a few similar posters issued in the mid to late 1950s to help promote reenlistment. This poster features a U.S. Army’s MIM-23 HAWK Missile. The Hawk Missile was developed by the Raytheon Corporation in the 1950s and entered service with the U.S. Army in 1959 which is probably around the time this undated poster was issued. The MIM-23 HAWK (Homing All The Way Killer) was a surface-to-air medium range missile which evolved and stayed in service with the U.S. Army until it was replaced by the first generation of the modern day Patriot missile system in the 1990s. Text on this poster reads in part:
Did You Know? Deadly Defender! The Army’s Hawk Missile Equipped With An Advanced Radar “Eye” Ignores Stationary Objects To Seek Out MOVING TARGETS ONLY. The Hawk Specializes In Destroying Supersonic Aerial Invaders At Tree Top Heights! Men “In The Know” RE-UP Army
Additional text on the poster mentions retirement pay benefits and touts the fact that printed electronic circuits being used in radios and televisions at the time were first developed by U.S. Army engineers. This vintage original poster is free of tape and pinholes and shows moderate handling wear including some light bumping to the edges in spots. The poster has a very slight trace of staining visible in a few spots along the right edge and is otherwise clean ,with bright color. Overall condition is very good.
