This a rare antique original Union Label Bulletin poster issued by the American Federation of Labor in 1906. This is a window card style poster printed one side only on lightweight cardboard. This poster features graphic illustrations of 64 different union made labels for American trade unions affiliated with the American Federation of Labor with an index to the union labels printed at the bottom. The union labels and index are bracket by text at the top and bottom that reads:
UNION LABEL BULLETIN Issued by American Federation of Labor: Samuel Gompers, President; Frank Morrison, Secretary; Headquarters 423-425 G Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. – DEMAND THE UNION LABEL
A copyright by the American Federation of Labor and the date June 1906 are printed at the bottom of the poster. The lower margin indicates this window card style poster was printed by the Press of the Campbell Company of Chicago, Illinois.
Union Label Bulletins were frequently issued as periodicals to educate trade union members and the general public to look for the union label and to promote the patronage of union made goods. The window card style posters such as this one appear to be harder to find than the periodical formats.
This poster is an original antique issued by the AFL in 1906. The poster is bit fragile with a few small chips on the edges and a couple cracks on the right edge including one that extends several inches into the image area. This longer crack also has a small chip off in the image area as well. The poster shows some toning from age which is more pronounced along the right edge. There are some areas of surface contact loss of paper on the back of the poster not affecting the front side. While this poster definitely shows wear it still makes and impressive display as an original artifact of American labor history.
