The YMCA along with the American Library Association, the Jewish Welfare Board and other charitable organizations helped to organize and promote the 1918 UWW campaign.
For this poster Herter renders an image of American doughboys somewhere in France approaching a YMCA building on winter night with deep snow on the ground and trees around them. Through the open door of the YMCA building we catch of glimpse of a warmly lit festive scene.
Albert Herter was an major artist in early 20th century America whose works include murals found in the Massachusetts State House, the Wisconsin State Capitol, the Los Angeles Public Library and the National Academy of Sciences.
