This is a vintage original overhead trolley car cardboard sign issued as advertising by the Taggart Baking Company of Indianapolis. This sign features the company’s flagship Wonder Bread product. Yes, that Wonder Bread! The Taggart Baking Company introduced Wonder Bread in 1921 and it became the first pre-sliced bread to be nationally distributed in the United States. Wonder Bread would become a mainstay in lunchboxes and lunch buckets across America. Wonder Bread’s popularity was immense and it became almost a symbol of progress in Atomic Age America writ large. Love it or hate it, Wonder Bread is an iconic brand and one of the “foods that built America”.
This vintage original sign copyright dated 1923 in the lower margin is an original artifact of those fledgling early days of the Wonder Bread brand before it would achieve its special place in the hearts of Americans in the decades that followed. This sign has some scattered spots and staining in places, A former owner applied a piece of cello tape on the verso to stabilize a small crack of about an inch on the left edge and another small piece is applied, also on verso, to stabilize small crack of about a half in on the right edge. The sign still displays well and is in good shape overall especially when you consider it will be 100 years old soon.
