This is a vintage original and rare Chinese Nationalist propaganda poster depicting a scene from the 1937 Battle of Shanghai.  This poster was likely issued by the Chinese National Revolutionary Army or the Kuomintang.   We believe the image depicts Chinese army forces defending the Zhabei district of Shanghai from Japanese invaders.  The Battle of Shanghai was the first major engagement fought between the National Revolutionary Army of the Republic of China and the Imperial Japanese Army of the Empire of Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War.  The 1937 Battle of Shanghai lasted more than three months, eventually involved over 1,000,000 combatants and at the time was the largest urban battle ever fought in human history not eclipsed until Stalingrad some five years later.  Some historians have described the 1937 Battle of Shanghai as the first battle of World War Two.  The title of the poster printed across the top translates to “Battle of the North Gate by 800 Brave Soldiers".

This poster has been professionally conservation mounted to linen.  The poster has had restoration to some replaced loss in the margins.    A few tears extending into the image area have been expertly repaired during the linen backing process.  A few pieces of tape were removed and neutralized prior to linen backing.   A few small punctures and closed tears in the image area where expertly repaired during the linen backing process.  We do not locate another copy of this rare Chinese Sino-Japanese War propaganda poster.   Contact us for additional photos as needed.
