This is a group of four vintage original posters promoting milk consumption created by the cartoonist and illustrator Milt Youngren (1899-1969) and issued by the National Dairy Council in 1939. These posters are all unform in size and feature cartoonish illustrations and rhyming text extoling the healthy benefits of drinking milk. All poster have a 1939 copyright by the National Dairy Council in the lower right corner margin area and all are signed in print by Youngren. Text on the posters reads:
STAY YOUNG FELL GAY – DRINK MILK EACH DAY
NOT TOO SKINNY…NOT TOO FAT – BY DRINKING MILK YOU’LL MANAGE THAT
BE CHARMING…BE BRIGHT – DRINK MILK FEEL RIGHT
FEEL FIT…GET IN STEP – DRINK MILK HAVE MORE PEP
Youngren was born in Baltimore and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a veteran of the First World War and then attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Much of his career was spent with the Chicago Tribune newspaper publishing company. Youngren also illustrated Big Little Books and provided illustrations for commercial clients including Schwinn Bicycles and Kool-Aid as well as the National Dairy Council.
These vintage original posters are lightly used and free of tape. The posters have light handling wear and a pinhole on each corner and one poster, Stay Young Feel Gay, has a small pinhole tear on the tip of the upper right corner. Overall condition is very good.
