This rare WWII poster by prolific poster artist Edward McKnight Kauffer was produced by the Greek Office of Information in 1942 for circulation in the United States to remind Americans of the war being fought in that distant and ancient land.
American-born Kauffer’s long career in graphic design began in Great Britain where his clients included the London Underground and the Shell Oil Company among others. At the outbreak of the Second World War Kauffer returned to the United States where his skill as a poster designer was deployed in support of the Allied cause. This poster highlights the Modernist style associated with Kauffer’s earlier poster work. The silhouette of a modern solider seems inspired by classical Greek sculpture and forms the background for a Greek flag billowing defiantly in the wind. The lower margin gives the Washington D.C. address of the Greek Office of Information and indicates the poster was made in the United States.
This poster was issued folded and will that ship that way. The poster has a small notch off the lower margin near the lower left hand corner and another small notch off the margin near the upper right hand corner. The poster also has a short tear of about 3 cm on the right edge but nothing torn off or missing there. This poster is otherwise in very good condition overall with just modest handling wear and some toning from age. The vintage original poster has nice color and displays beautifully.
