This is a vintage original Atomic Age pictorial cartoon map of the “Vacation Playground” region around Bemidji in north central Minnesota, also known as the mythological home of American folk hero Paul Bunyan. This is a folding map that folds open to about 21.75” x 17” with the pictorial cartoon map covering the entirety of one side. Included are whimsical icons and cartoonish caricatures illustrating special features and points of interest in the region. The cartouche area of the map printed in the upper right corner shows a 1947 copyright by the W.A. Fisher Company of Virginia, Minnesota and reads:
Cartomap BEMIDJI Minnesota VACATION PLAYGROUND with Highways and Historical Data
Just below the cartouche area credit is given to Harold Hagg, the map’s designer, and the Minnesota Historical Society for providing the historical information used in compiling the map. Lakes featured include Lower Red Lake, Lake Bemidji, Cass Lake, Blackduck Lake, Gull Lake, Long Lake, Lake Plantagenet, Big Turtle Lake and many others.
This vintage original map is folded as issued in an excellent, near mint condition. The colors are bold and it doesn’t look like this map was ever unfolded or used. This map would frame up beautifully.
