This is a vintage original poster for playwright Dave Hare’s adaption of Fanshen! The Story Of Revolution In A Chinese Village which premiered in 1975 at the Hampstead Theatre Club in the London Borough of Camden.
This play was based on the book Fanshen: A Documentary of a Revolution in a Chinese Village by William Hinton published in 1966. Fanshen chronicled the land reform program of the Chinese Communist Party in the 1940s at a village in Shanxi Province in northern China. When Hinton returned to the United States in 1953 at the height of McCarthyism, after living in China for several years, his papers were confiscated by customs authorities and turned over to the Senate Committee on Internal Security which ultimately resulted in Hinton being blacklisted.
This vintage original poster has been professionally conservation mounted to linen. A few tears, including long tears, were expertly repaired during the linen backing process. Some staining and a few small areas of loss on edges were also repaired during the linen backing process. This rare poster still displays well and is nearly impossible to find in any condition.
