This vintage original travel poster promoting the Georgian Black Sea resort city of Batumi was created by the Uzbek born artist Maria Nesterova-Berzina and issued by Intourist, the official state tourism agency of the former Soviet Union, in 1936. For this poster Nesterova-Berzina renders an image of a woman agricultural worker carrying a large basket filled with a bountiful harvest of oranges on a hillside with the Black Sea, the city of Batumi and a tourist bus visible in the background behind her. Batumi is Georgia’s second largest city and the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara located in the subtropical zone at the foot of the Caucuses Mountains. In addition to being a center of citrus cultivation Batumi is also an important seaport and popular tourist destination known for casinos and sometimes called “the Las Vegas of the Black Sea”.
This vintage original poster has been professionally linen backed. Two short tears, both without paper loss, including one of about two inches on the bottom edge were expertly repaired during the linen backing process. The poster is has sharp color and displays beautifully. Overall condition is very good.
