This is a vintage original c.1920 Arrow Shirts advertising cardboard trolley car sign style poster featuring the iconic “Arrow Collar Man” artwork created by J.C. Leyendecker. This sign is printed one side only on cardboard and was designed to be installed as overhead advertising signage in street cars and trolley cars.
This trolley card sign features an image of a suave man with chiseled facial features and lantern jaw in a moment of repose. Arrow Collor Man reads a book and strikes an elegant pose as he wears a silk smoking jacket over his Arrow shirt and collar. Text on the poster reads:
ARROW SHIRTS With Starched Cuffs are proper and distinctly refined $1.50 up – Cluett, Peabody & Co., Inc. Makers of ARROW COLLARS
The artwork isn’t signed but the same image of the man’s head attributed to Leyendecker appears in magazine ads running in 1920.
This antique original trolley card sign shows some toning from age and light handling wear including slight bumping to the upper righthand corner. The sign has a single pinhole on each of the upper corners and the margin at the top center. There are a couple spots on the back of the sign were it looks like tape was pulled off and a name written on the back of the trolley card sign, neither of which affect the artwork on the front side. Overall condition is very good for this vintage original.
