This vintage original and rare poster promoting Canada’s spectacular Jasper National Park was created by the artist Alfred Joseph “A.J.” Casson and issued by the Canadian National Railways in the 1930s. This is a silkscreen poster printed one side only on poster board. For this poster Casson renders an image of golfers on a putting green dwarfed by a massive mountain peak of the Canadian Rockies. Casson’s name appears at the bottom of the image along with the Canadian National Railways logo and text that reads JASPER NATIONAL PARK In the Canadian Rockies.
A.J. Cassson (1898-1992) was a member of the “Group of Seven”, an influential group of Canadian landscape painters considered Canada’s first major national art movement. Casson became Art Director for the first Canadian silkscreen printing firm, Sampson-Matthews Ltd, in 1932 and remained in that position until 1958. No printer is indicated on the poster but the lower edge is printed “Made in Canada” and this silkscreen was likely produced by Sampson-Matthews Ltd.
This vintage original poster has had some expert touchup, overpainting and restoration to wear on the corners. All four corners showed wear and have been braced on the verso with some overpainting and restoration to small areas of loss on the edges. The poster displays beautifully.
