The artist and renown decorative mapmaker MacDonald Gill was first commissioned by the Underground Electric Railways Company of London in 1914 to produce this incredible and influential pictorial map of the city. At first glance the map appears medieval in design but a closer examination reveals elaborate detail of the teeming beehive of activity that was the modern metropolis of London. This map was so popular with the travelling public that it was updated and reissued for retail sale a few times in the years that followed including this c.1928 edition.
This whimsical map offers incredible detail of one of the world’s great cities and has been professionally linen backed and restored as close as possible to it’s original grandeur. This poster shows some toning most evidently in the margins and a couple tears have been expertly repaired. The display quality is delightful for this vintage original.
