This vintage original and rare interwar period poster was issued by the United States Navy for recruiting purposes in 1930. This poster features a stylized image a U.S. Navy sailor smiling broadly next to a ship’s porthole bracketed by text that reads:

HONOR and GLORY – THE NAVY opens the porthole to opportunity. Will you be there to accept the advantages…

The document code printed in the lower margin indicates this poster was issued in 1930.  No artist is indicated but the same artwork of the smiling sailor was used for other U.S. Navy recruiting posters and is sometimes attributed to James Montgomery Flagg.  Far fewer U.S. Navy recruiting posters were issued during the interwar period making them much harder to find than posters issued during WWI and WWII. Posters from the interwar period tended to emphasis travel, the opportunity to learn job skills and personal enrichment and other peacetime messages such as this example here.

This vintage original poster is unrestored and has a tack hole about a half inch in diameter near each of the upper corners along with tear of about six inches on the top edge.  The poster also shows some toning from age, moderate handling wear and has some bumping and a few short tears on the edges.  This poster displays well as is or with basic linen backing, which we can arrange for an additional cost, could look close to new.  Overall condition is very good for this rare vintage original Interwar period U.S. Navy recruiting poster.
