This striking vintage original Art Deco style poster was created for the Chemins de fer de l'État (French State Railway) and the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique shipping company, or French Line as it was known in the English speaking world, by the artist Albert Sebille (1874-1953) in the 1930s.   Sebille renders a waterline perspective of passengers disembarking from a massive triple-stacker ocean liner directly onto a train pulled by a modern steam locomotive.  The ocean liner would be either the SS Ile de France or more likely the SS Normandie which launched in 1935 around the time this poster was issued.   Those two ships were the only two triple-stackers operated by the French Line.   The lower margin indicates this poster was printed in France by “Novia” of 112 Rue Réaumur, Paris.

This vintage original poster has been professionally conservation mounted to linen.   A few short tears and small abrasions on the edges, mostly on the lower edge, have been expertly repaired during the linen backing process.  The colors retain their original boldness and overall condition is very good.  Interest buyers can contact us for photos of this poster prior to linen backing.
