This vintage original and rare poster was issued by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1944 to encourage farmers to grow sugar beets in support of the war effort.  This poster features American soldiers charging forward with bayonets fixed in what looks like a frenzied amphibious assault over text that reads:

PLANT MORE SUGAR BEETS Sugar Is Energy – Let’s Give ‘Em Plenty

Prior to WWII large quantities of cane sugar were imported from the Philippines but this supply line was cut off during WWII.  Increasing domestic sugar production in the United States became critical since sugar was a key component in producing industrial alcohol for munitions and synthetic rubber for the war effort.   The government set a target of one million acres in sugar beet production in 1943 but fell far short with just under 600,000 acres in cultivation that year.

The lower margin indicates this poster was printed by the United States Government Printing Office in 1944. This is a rare poster which was likely only issued for use in sugar beet producing areas.  We trace no auction history for this poster and Worldcat doesn’t locate any libraries holding a copy.

This poster was issued folded and shows moderate handling wear and modest toning from age.  There is a small bit of paper loss to the tip of the lower right corner not affecting text or illustration. The lateral fold lines show slight wear and about a quarter inch of separation on the left edge.  The poster is free or tape or pinholes and the colors are remain strong.  Overall condition is very good.
