This vintage original and rare window card style poster was created by the artist James Montgomery Flagg and issued by the United China Relief (U.S.) charitable aid agency. The United China Relief (U.S.) aid agency was formed in New York City in 1941 as an amalgamation of several smaller organizations working to aid China during the brutal war that followed the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in the 1930s.
For this poster, Flagg recreates the Uncle Sam figure from his iconic I Want You For The U.S. Army WWI poster. Uncle Sam is seen helping a Chinese mother with a young child as explosions and fire light the night sky behind bracketed by the title HELP CHINA! CHINA IS HELPING US.
This is a window card style poster printed one side only on cardboard. A snipe or small paper banner has been affixed across the bottom of the poster which reads LINCOLN UNITED WAR CHEST Oct. 19-29. The words “United China Relief” are printed on the poster under the snipe. We are selling the poster as found without any attempt to remove the snipe. James Montgomery Flagg’s name appears signed in print in the lower left corner of the image area. This vintage original poster retains the original bold colors adn shows only slight handling wear. Overall condition is excellent.
