This is an original antique Mexican crime broadside published by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo in 1914 and illustrated with an engraving created by prolific and highly influential Mexican artist and printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada. This broadside concerns the case of El Sargento Juan Diaz who was charged with murdering his commanding officer with a Mauser firearm. The broadside describes the crime and trial that followed in which an unrepentant and surly Juan Diaz was sentenced to death for murder. The masthead of the broadside reads:
EL SARGENTO JUAN DIAZ CONDENADO A MUERTE No hay esperanza de salvación para el reo.
The broadside features an engraving of Diaz standing at trial before the judge signed in print “POSADA – MEX.” The lower margin is printed “4a IMPRENTA 74. – MEXICO, JUNIO DE 1914.” and “PRECIO 3 CENTAVOS”.
This antique original Mexican sensational crime broadside is printed one side only and shows some toning from age and moderate handling wear including a short tear in the margin on the right edge near the lower corner. The tip of the lower left corner is detached but present and has been reattached temporarily with a small piece of removable acid free document repair tissue applied to verso. Overall condition is very good.
