This vintage original Cuban political poster supporting the Central American county of Guatemala was created by the artist Olivio Martinez and issued by OSPAAAL (The Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America) in 1969. OSPAAAL was founded in Havana at the 1966 Tricontinental Conference in Cuba with the stated purpose of promoting the causes of socialism and communism in the Third World.
For this poster Martinez depicts what looks like an Alux figure from ancient Mayan mythology holding a modern military assault rifle with bayonet attached. The poster’s title Day Of Solidarity With Guatemala (February 6) is printed in Spanish, French and Arabic language along with English so the poster could be used internationally. This poster was issued in the late 1960s when the Guatemalan Civil War was raging as leftist rebels backed by Cuba, the Soviet Union and their allies fought fiercely against the Guatemalan government backed by the United States.
The vintage original poster is free of tape and pinholes and in very good condition overall with just light handling wear including edges slight bumped in spots and a short half inch tear on right edge near the upper corner. Overall condition is very good.
