In addition to the English language version seen here this same poster was also issued in another English language version with different text and a French language version and intended for use outside of Spain. While the United States, France, Great Britain and other friendly nations remained non-interventionist, large numbers of foreigners volunteered to fight in the Republican international brigades so thus the need for posters such as this. The poster features the searing image of a dead child set against a bomber filled sky with text that reads:
MADRID – The “Military” Practice Of The Rebels – What Europe Tolerates Or Protects, What Your Children Can Expect – Ministerio De Propaganda
Various sources date this poster to 1937 although the poster isn’t otherwise dated. The poster makes reference to the aerial bombing of Madrid carried out by German and Italian fascist forces in support of Franco’s Nationalist forces in which some 2,000 civilians were killed in November 1936.
This vintage original poster has no tape or pinholes and shows moderate handling wear including a light lateral crease across the center and a few short tears on the edges without loss of paper including one tear of about an inch and half on the right edge near the top corner. Overall condition is very good for this unrestored vintage original.
