This rare poster was created by the artist Charles Buckles Falls and issued by the Library War Service toward the end of WWI. For this poster Charles Buckles Falls renders an image of an American solider reclining with a book under the title Yanks in Germany want more BOOKS with text at the bottom that reads Take good live fiction to the Public Library for immediate shipment American Library Association.
The Library War Service was established in 1917 as a partnership between the American Library Association and the Library of Congress. The program relied primarily on book donations from private citizens and was a huge success ultimately distributing as many as ten millions books and magazines to American forces overseas between 1917 and 1920. Charles Buckles Falls created a more commonly found “Books Wanted” poster for the Library War Service which featured an American soldier carrying a large stack of books. This poster with the soldier reclining is much rarer and comes in at least one other variant with text at the top that reads “The CAMP LIBRARY is YOURS”.
This vintage original poster has been professionally linen backed with some minor touch up as needed. Two short pieces of tape were removed and neutralized off the back of the poster prior to linen backing and a couple short tears on the edges without paper loss have been skillfully repaired. The colors retain their original richness and the poster displays beautifully. Overall condition is very good.
