c.1960 Vintage Don The Beachcomber Pictorial Map Menu Tiki Bar Original
This is a vintage original c.1960 menu from the Don the Beachcomber restaurant in Chicago, Illinois. This menu is four pages printed on lightweight cardstock measuring about 12” x 10” per page. The bottom of the second page is printed with the address of the Don The Beachcomber restaurant at 101 East Walton Place, Chicago, Illinois. The menu has a 1941 copyright and the lower margin of third page is printed “6-60” which we believe dates this menu to 1960. The front cover features an elaborate South Seas Polynesian themed pictorial map of the South Pacific and the back cover features a similarly elaborate pictorial map of the Caribbean Sea.
Donn Beach founded the first Don The Beachcomber restaurant in Hollywood, California in the 1930s and after serving in WWII grew the business into a chain with dozens of locations across the United States. Beach is widely recognized as the “Father of Tiki Bar culture” in America. His restaurants promoted exotic South Seas themed powerful drinks such as the Sumatra Kula and Zombie cocktails. There were many imitators that followed as Tiki themed bars opened across the United States in the years following WWII but Don The Beachcomber was the original.
