This vintage original poster advertising Windsor as a travel destination was created by the artist Gordon Nicoll and issued by British Railways in the early 1950s. Nicoll renders an image of a group of spectators in Georgian attire on the bank of the River Thames watching the Royal Barge pass with Windsor castle visible in the distance. Just below the image area appears the title Windsor – See Britain By Train.
The British Railways logo appears in the lower right corner and text across the bottom advises that additional information is available from travel agencies and British Railways offices in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Toronto. Nicoll created several different posters for the London North & Eastern Railway (LNER) and served as a camouflage officer for Britain’s Air Ministry during WWII. The lower margin indicates this poster was printed in Great Britain by Charles & Read Ltd.
This poster is free of tape or pinholes and shows moderate handling wear including some bumping and short tears on the edges most event on the right side near the upper corner. This poster displays nicely as is or with basic linen backing, which we can provide for an additional cost, this poster could be brought to an almost like new appearance. Overall condition is very good.
