This vintage original c.1935 travel poster advertises Switzerland’s Glacier Express. Development of Switzerland’s alpine railway system in the 1920s made it feasible to operate through coaches all the way from Zermatt to St. Moritz and return. In June 1930, the first such train operating through coaches from Zermatt to St. Moritz was inaugurated under the name Glacier Express, in honor of the Rhone Glacier near Gletsch on the Furka Pass. This poster incorporates a route map from St. Moritz to Zermatt and Gornergrat via Disentis, Andermatt, Gletsch, Brig and Visp. The lower margin indicates this poster was printed in Switzerland by Fielder Ltd Chaux-De-Fonds.
This vintage original poster has been professionally conservation mounted to linen. A few short tears and small abrasions on the edges without paper loss including two tears of between two and three inches on the left edge have been expertly repaired. Some creasing on the lower left corner was also mitigated during the linen backing process. The colors retain their original boldness and overall condition is very good. Interest buyers can contact us for photos of this poster prior to linen backing.
