This vintage original and rare poster was created by the prolific Australian-American illustrator Melbourne Brindle for the Matson Line shipping company in the early 1930s. This poster advertises the Matson Line passenger service from Great Britain via America and the South Seas to Australia in 28 days and New Zealand in 25 days. The poster isn’t dated but features an image of the SS Mariposa ocean liner which took her maiden voyage in January of 1932 so thus a c.1932 date seems about right.
Brindle was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1904 and immigrated to the United States as a teenager. Brindle’s long and successful career as an illustrator included creating covers for the Saturday Evening Post magazine and working for major clients like Douglas Aircraft, United Airlines and automakers Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. This poster dated to the early 1930s is from early in Bridle’s career and rarely seen as we only trace a single specimen at auction.
This vintage original poster has been professionally linen backed with some expert touch up and restoration as needed including replacement to some small areas of paper loss in the image area. The poster displays nicely. Please contact us for more information as needed and please see our other listings for another Melbourne Brindle Matson Lines.
