This whimsical pictorial cartoon map of Grand Canyon National Park was created by the artist Jo Mora. We know of at least two editions of this poster. The first edition, copyrighted in 1931 is in black and white. This pictorial map offered here is the second color edition issued in the 1950s. This elaborate pictorial map offers tremendous detail showing the Grand Canyon area as it existed in 1931. The lower margin is printed “Jo Mora Publications, Monterey, California”,
The artist Jo Mora was born in Montevideo, Uruguay and emigrated to the United States at a young age. Both his father, Domingo Mora, and his brother, F. Luis Mora, were successful artist. Jo Mora was a diverse artist who spent most of his professional life working in California as an illustrator, painter, mapmaker, photographer, sculpture, muralist and more.
This vintage original pictorial map poster was one of Mora’s most popular works and is in excellent condition with just slight handling wear and light creasing at the tip of the upper righthand corner.
