This vintage original 1918 poster was created by the artist Edmund M. Ashe and issued by the United States Treasury to help promote the sale of war bonds during the First World War.   For this poster Ashe renders a harrowing image of a U.S. Army doughboy in tattered shirt reeling back to hurl a hand grenade.  German soldiers with bayonets fixed occupy a trench position just in front amidst a no-man’s-land hellscape of billowing smoke and burnt earth.  Text brackets the visceral combat scene and implores the viewer Lend the way they Fight – Buy Bonds to your UTMOST.

This vintage original poster has been professionally conservation mounted to linen. A short tear of about two inches on the top edge and some loss on the lower left corner was expertly repaired during the linen backing process.  Overpainting on the margins and lower left corner was also done during the linen backing process. The poster displays nicely and overall condition is very good.
